PostSubject: HT 20 preamp valves change   Tue Mar 29, 2011 1:54 pm

Hello,
I'm considering to change the 2 preamp valve on my HT-20 head (through an open back V30), searching for little more gain and bite.

Has someone tried to do it?

Some advices?

Is it worth to change the stock TADs?

Thank you,
Luigi

There are a number of threads on this subject....it is absolutely worthwhile to yank the stock preamp and power tubes.

I replaced all four tubes with JJs....definite improvement.

How is your high end with the V30? I have an open back with a G12H anniversary and have to keep my treble pot dimed out to acheive any high end.

Hello guys,

about JJs: did you buy some tubes selection (e.g. Tube-Town has V1 selection or balanced selection)? did you re-bias the amp for the power tube replacement?

about V30/HighEnd (I guess you are speaking about the OD channel): I've noticed that the sound has pronounced high-mid (1.5 to 2.5kHz) but "controlled" high end. I've to say that I've got good results in tone shaping using an extern EQ in the fx loop, in my case an Artec parametric eq. This definetely give more control on the overall sound.

Just for reference, what are your musical genres?

PS: sorry for my english, i'm Italian Very Happy

Hello Nyarlath, please don't apologize for your English, it is perfect.

I re biased the amp when i swapped the tube, but the instructions i followed are only applicable to the 60 and 100 watts amps,

auburnshredder biased his 20, he can maybe help.

I bought a matched set for power tubes, the pre amp tubes just bought them with out selection.

Thanks

Hey guys, actually I did not bias the HT-20 at all...just swapped out the four tubes...and no problems to date. Supposedly there is enough range with the HT-20 bias to allow for similar tubes.

Nyarlath: I play mostly classic and hard rock, maybe a little metal and some Stevie Ray type stuff. I may be swapping out the G12H for an Eminence or WGS.
