| Has anyone else noticed the distortion on the gain channel to be very harsh? I've tried changing preamp tubes and found it doesn't help a lot. It seems to have an icy pick feel to it, especially in the highs. I'm wondering if anyone's improved this through changing their power tubes. I've only changed the preamp tubes so far, used JJ's and even Jan Phillips AT7, which dropped the gain a bit, but didn't warm it up any. Anyone found a nice warm setting on the gain channel? If so could you share your settings. I'm using a Gibson Les Paul Supreme and playing the HT20 head into a Mesa 2x12 rec cab.
Thanks |

I know what you mean. If your not playing metal turn the gain down.. your probably not relizing how much gain the 20s got. I have the 40 and I dont use the stock modern voicing your 20 has, only fot metal. So I really lucked out because i probably wouldnt like the 20. I use the voicing switch that actually takes away alot of the "harsh sound" and still It has more than plenty gain at 10oclock for rock punk. Check out my settings in the shared setting in the fourm. Your mesa got v 30s right? |

| JJs helped a bit with the gain sound, and even the clean. I only use the clean, and have floor pres for gain. I was hoping the gain side would be a bit more to my liking, but haven't gotten it there.
Not a huge deal since I've not used the gain side of an amp in a long while, but I do agree with your assessment.
If you're using the Celestions in the cab, I've always found them be harsh so might be contributing.

| Yeah, there's Celestions in the cab.....also I have tried the gain all the way down, to where it just barely comes up, still pretty harsh. Maybe I'll switch for a pair of Tungsol EL 34's and see how that works. |

What pedals are you using for gain with your HT20? |

| You should try an EQ pedal to take some of the edge off. i use an MXR 10-band in the effects loop and it makes a huge difference. you can really customize the tone and even get some boost. for me, it was like taking a blanket off the amp. without it, i wouldn't be getting the tone i want from the HT-20. |

THIS!!!
there is no such thing as an amp that a decent EQ pedal cannot improve. |

| Thanks for all the responses guys. It's great to see so many people trying to actually be helpful on here. Tonight I played a gig with the amp and actually was pretty pleased with the sound. I turned the master volume to about 3 o'clock and used the distortion channel with the gain on 9 o'clock and volume about noon. I also put a jekyll and hyde in front of it on the OD side just for a little more boost and it rounded it off a bit. Actually a decent sound, I'm sure if I keep messing with it I'll be pretty happy. It sounded much better when cranked in a live situation with a band, so it has redeemed itself for the time being. I have 2 more gigs next weekend, and I hope it behaves the same way. |

Normally, an Ibanez TubeKing TK999HT with a JJ 12ax7. Love the sound of it. Something's acting funky at the moment (Just the power supply, I think, but haven't had time to muck around). SO, in the mix now is a Tech21 GT2. It's an analog modeler that I really like. I also use a FullTone Fatboost 3 as a boost for lead stuff. |
