| I've already updated my OD preamp to a GT 12AY7 and the speaker to a WGS Vet 30 with good results. Now I want to play around with the power section using either the Mullard reissue EL34s or the Winged-C EL34s. A matched pair locally for the Mullards are $45 and the Winged-Cs are $60...so cost difference isn't a big issue. Online I've heard that Winged-Cs are IT. When I talked with the local amp shops, they both said they would go with the Mullards. I realize everyone has their own preferences, just looking for opinions before I pull the trigger. Looking for the most transparent, fullest (nice bass response, good mids and clear/non-piercing highs) sound possible. Any recommendations?? Thx! |

| i have used the winged C's in one of my amps and they are still in there going on 3 years - i like them just fine they seem very smooth to me and ive had no issues at all with them
i have not tried the Mullards but Toddweller on here uses them and swears by them - in his words "clarity is there"
i never seen too mauch bad said against either one of them... |

| Agree. Pretty much win-win, personal preference being the only deciding factor.

| I agree that I probably can't go wrong either way...more wondering what significant differences in tone there might be between the two. |

| I had some Mullard Reissue EL34s by Electro-Harmonix in a Mesa DR 3-channel head I used t o have--and boy, it was like as if a blanket was removed fro mthe cabinet, LOL!! it sounded sweet and organic, unlike the Mesa 6L6s I had initially--just can't go wrong with them |

| Well...I went with the Winged-Cs for the EL34s and a Mullard 12AX7, combined with the GT 12AY7 and the WGS Vet 30...this amp is freaking amazing. It is truly like a blanket was taken off the amp. It is so dynamic now, it's amazing. The clean channel is incredibly full-bodied and chimey. The OD channel is tight and responsive with great bass, mids and highs. It's hard to believe how big a difference the changes made to the tone. If your thinking about the Winged-Cs or the Mullards...go for it! Gotta get back to jamming now. It's gonna be a long night... |

Good choice, IMHO Winged -C's are the best affordable El34's out there. The only El34 I've ever had that sounded better was in a one trick pony early-mid '90's 50 watt JCM900 I owned with a pair of these ... http://tubedepot.com/nos-6ca7-holland.html Best sounding el34's I've ever heard. But who can afford $500 for a pair of tubes. |

majik...I can't even begin to tell you how pleased I am. The cleans rivals any nice Fender I've played and the OD is tight and smooth with a nice range from slight breakup through to hi gain. Nice bottom everywhere and balanced mids/highs.
The amazing part is how responsive the amp is. You can REALLY hear changes when you tweak the knobs now...even the ISF! If anyone is thinking about all the changes I did...man it is EASILY worth the $150 and then some. BS should really think about making these simple changes to the amp in production. If they did it at their cost, it probably would only reflect maybe another $100 to the sale price. I'd easily pay that and more...but maybe it would cut into the sale/marketing of the other series.
Anywho...this amp ROCKS!! |

| hopefully i can get the same results after a speaker change - i'm done with tubes now and ok with those still researching the speaker choices... i've said that before - i would glady have paid an extra 150 bucks for better tubes and speakers - they would still be competitive even at the extra cost |
